After completing their cycle-based educational process, 16 Farc-Ep ex-combatants living at the former Territorial Space for Reincorporation and Training (ETCR) Tierra Grata – in the department of Cesar – graduated from high school.The ex-combatants began their education process in September 2019 and ended during the first half of 2020, within the framework of the 'Plowing for Education' project (Arando por la Educación), implemented by the Norwegian Council and the Ministry of National Education with the support of the Agency for Reincorporation and Normalization (ARN).The graduate roll includes Guillermo Torres, former combatant and current mayor of Turbaco, Bolívar, known as 'The singer of Farc-Ep ' or 'Julián Conrado', and Yarledis Olaya, president of the Community Action Board (JAC) of Tierra Grata village, in the municipality of La Paz." It is a great dream come true. I never even thought about going back to school, but when the opportunity arose while in the reincorporation process I did not think twice and set out to fulfill the goal of wearing these graduation robes. I alternated my studies between working with the community and being the mother of two girls aged 11 and 2. Now I will go on to study to become a professional in Graphic Design ", says Yarledis Olaya, a 36-year-old FARC-Ep ex-combatant.During the ceremony held at former ETCR Tierra Grata, San José de Oriente Agricultural Technical Educational Institution delivered the diplomas that certify the 16 ex-combatants of the Farc-Ep as high school graduates after completing their primary, secondary and secondary/vocational school studies.Angélica Agámez , ARN coordinator in the department of Cesar, recognized that "this type of initiatives of the National Government in conjunction with international cooperation guarantee that ex-combatants access education to acquire skills to build a new life project and their time, to advance with the reincorporation process in Colombia. "
The training process was also accompanied by ARN professionals to guarantee the emotional and social well-being of the ex-combatants, whilst allowing them to advance successfully during the eight months.
The 'Plowing for Education' program has been carried out throughout the national territory since 2017 as a training strategy and an academic model that allows ex-combatants to access literacy, basic and secondary education programs, thus contributing to the construction of life projects of this population, in compliance with the Peace with Legality policy. Data of interestAs of August 31, 210 ex-combatants advance their training process in the department of Cesar, of which 125 live at former ETCR Tierra Grata. 216 people (including ex-combatants and members of neighboring communities), have joined the Plowing for Education (Arando la Educación) model at former ETCR Tierra Grata since 2017.
